Werum equips a second Scottish research vessel with DAVIS-SHIP

Lueneburg, May 6 2009 - Werum Software and Systems has equipped the Scottish research vessel Scotia with the DAVIS-SHIP test data management system. The DAVIS-SHIP system has already been installed on FRV Alba na Mara. Both vessels belong to the Marine Scotland fleet.

This latest project establishes DAVIS-SHIP as the standard system on these research vessels. Werum adjusted DAVIS-SHIP to the requirements of FRV Scotia by configuring and parameterising the system. No specific programming was required, and the project was completed in four months.

Currently used on most German research vessels DAVIS-SHIP is designed to record, process, visualise, distribute, and archive maritime measurement data.

DAVIS-SHIP captures the measured data from all the devices and sensors installed on Scotia. The system provides a wide range of scaleability and can be adjusted through simple configuration, for example, in order to temporarily connect devices required for a specific mission. The system's archiving component stores all the data, and automatically generates archive records on storage media. These are then supplied to the connected land-based system for further use.

DAVIS-SHIP can run unattended, and this reduces the crew's workload. There is no requirement for an on-board system administrator, as the system is serviced by specially trained land-based personnel.

DAVIS-SHIP is a user-driven system: Werum regularly makes ongoing improvements to the system in response to requirements suggested by the user community, and is constantly integrating new functions to benefit all users - from scientists and shipping companies to government agencies.

About Marine Scotland
Marine Scotland is a directorate of the Scottish Government which has responsibility for marine science, planning, management and monitoring measures. It brings together the functions of Fisheries Research Services (FRS), the Scottish Fisheries Protection Agency (SFPA) and the Scottish Government's Marine Directorate.

FRV Scotia was built by Ferguson Shipyards in Glasgow. The 60-meter vessel is based in Aberdeen. The Scotia's main operational areas are the North Sea and the North-East Atlantic. In this region, the research vessel monitors fish populations and supports research into the effects of different fishing techniques on fish stocks.
