Werum supplied the PLANET with the communication system DAVIS-MAIL

Lueneburg, Germany, June, 25, 2008 - DAVIS-MAIL monitors the costs involved in e-mail communication via satellite. Its task is to manage user accounts via header previews, download selection, transfer size limitations and user account settlements so that scientists on the vessel can keep in touch with their offices without depleting their funds.

In 2005, the PLANET was put into service at the Eckernfoerde harbor of the WTD 71 (= Technical Center for Ships and Naval Weapons) and constitutes NATO's most modern research vessel. Both WTD 71 and the Underwater Acoustics and Marine Geophysics Research Institue (FWG) of the German Federal Armed Forces have access to this vessel for their research activities. The PLANET's main task consists of laying the scientific groundwork for developing underwater acoustic and electromagnetic positioning and communication systems.

WTD 71 uses both the onboard component (on the PLANET) and the onshore component of DAVIS-MAIL. The onshore component can be expanded to integrate additional research vessels in the system.
