Volkswagen: Control Center "Autonomous Driving"
Within the scope of the project "Autonomous Driving" Volkswagen in cooperation with partners has conceived and implemented a complex system making it possible to test serial vehicles on common test tracks with robots doing the steering and testing instead of human drivers.

Volkswagen uses DAVIS
for "Autonomous Driving" tests
The components of this system were presented on occasion of the "1998 IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Vehicles"; an overview is provided in the article:
    H. Weisser, P. J. Schulenberg, R. Bergholz, U. Lages: Autonomous Driving on Vehicle Test Tracks: Overview, Motivation, and Concept 1998 IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Vehicles, October 28-30, 1998, Stuttgart

The sensor data arising during the test drive are transferred to a
  • Control Center
by radio transmission. In this control center, the data are displayed on monitors and saved in a real-time database for evaluation purposes. In addition, sensor data and video sequences with customizable limit values are saved in a
  • Drive Recorder in the vehicle
The recorder is comparable to the "black box" used in aviation and enables the reproduction and analysis of specific driving situations later on. In the control center as well as in the Drive Recorder the test data management DAVIS by Werum is employed to save, manage, visualize and evaluate the data.
