Solutions and Products for Automotive Industry and Suppliers
Nowadays, automotive industry feels compelled to market new technologies and innovations as fast as possible. The trend towards reduced life cycles can cause substantial conflicts since the development period and the lifetime of a product get closer to one another. Thus, companies in automotive industry - just like their system and components suppliers and their engineering partners - are forced to reduce the time to market. A delay in launching a new product can severely disturb the amortization process. These two trends induce managers to focus on an optimization of the product development process. In this environment, there still is considerable potential for implementing IT systems designed to support business processes.

The Role of Test and Measurement in Product Development
In all stages of creating a product measuring and testing procedures are an important task - within the scope of research, material testing, development, and quality control. The test data management system DAVIS by Werum facilitates the engineer's job to reliably acquire and process, store and archive a multitude of data. In addition, the product DAVIS-CAR integrates traditionally measured values with associated video and audio data - digital and mobile. The information management system HyperTest on the other hand links the information of distributed measurement and test data systems - irrespective of the data format and origin. It does not matter whether it comes from the test bench, from test drives or simulations. Such 'a look over the fence' enables users to become aware of dependencies across departments and to reveal correlations that so far remained hidden.

Reusability of Test and Measurement Data  Top of Page
Today, vehicle design is frequently based on a modular concept. The engineers develop a new vehicle reusing more and more existing components. Due to this proceeding it is possible to achieve a considerably high level of synergy effects. With the information management system HyperTest Werum provides a tool that enables the developer to analyze very different aspects of existing test and measurement data and to integrate the results into the prototyping process. The developer can check whether a measurement intended to examine a specific aspect was taken before and whether the results are applicable. This way, the findings of earlier tests can be re-integrated into the development process while taking into account all relevant test conditions. In hardware-in-the-loop test set-ups the surrounding conditions are simulated based on real measurements stimulating the unit under test. The waveforms measured under real conditions can be used again. Time-consuming and expensive test drives can be minimized, modifications to the unit under test can be evaluated in a controlled environment.
Open and Flexible Systems to Provide for Future Requirements  Top of Page
IT systems for automotive industry must integrate smoothly into the life-cycle-oriented workflows and organizational structures or - even better - actively support the integration. For this reason, Werum develops open systems which are able to communicate with today's and tomorrow's tools. DAVIS provides open interfaces for data acquisition (e.g. CAN bus) and for the evaluation or visualization of data. Pre-configured tools are available to interface with standard programs like LabView®. HyperTest enables access to information stored in distributed systems, no matter what the data format is, thus making subsequent analysis with common tools much easier.

Test data management systems must be flexible and highly configurable to give the developer the required degree of freedom to define the test design. Generally, test benches are operated in permanently changing configurations (measuring points, test equipment, etc.) in different scenarios and media. Configuration procedures are expected to be quick and simple. That is why Werum examines the tasks specified for each individual customer's test system, identifies regularly recurring test configurations and analyzes test scenarios with the goal to further standardize specific test assemblies and procedures. This way, the productive life time of test benches can be extended, since all the resources are used most effectively and based on proven workflows.

Development and application of driver assistance systems
Driver assistance systems are designed to improve driving comfort and safety. Established systems like servo assistance for braking and steering, antilock brake systems (ABS), or antiskid control systems (ACS) were just the beginning. More advanced systems meant to assist the driver in complex traffic situations start moving into volume models.

For this purpose, the system DAVIS-CAR combines conventional measurement data acquired in test drives or simulations with audio-visual data collected at the same time. The user can configure the way any measured data, graphs, or object data, e.g. of ultrasonic or radar scanners, are integrated into the video stream in realtime.

The joint display of sensor data and measured values from a vehicle with audio/video recordings of the current ambient situation enables developers to easily assess the performance of assistance systems. DAVIS-CAR can process both analog and digital data and run on notebooks.

Wind tunnel control
Optimizing the aerodynamic drag coefficient (cW) is no longer the only and primary task of wind tunnels within the car industry. Apart from aerodynamic design support, modern wind tunnels are also used to minimize the wind noise or to improve airflow for engine cooling or air condition.

On the basis of their well-proven test data management system DAVIS Werum develops wind tunnel control systems that handle data acquisition and test control in a single system. An online display enables the engineers to directly monitor the test run. The data is stored in an integrated database system and archived for subsequent analysis.

DAVIS provides open interfaces for data transfer to various evaluation systems. Wind tunnel control systems by Werum are for instance in use at Toyota Motorsport in Cologne, Germany, and at AUDI's wind tunnel center in Ingolstadt, Germany.

Information management for measuring and test systems
The possibility to systematically and efficiently search data and information cuts down the development times considerably. Information networking often results in new insights and findings. DAVIS provides open interfaces to transfer the information to various analysis systems. The information management system HyperTest for instance gives an answer to the question of "who tested what, when and where and what was the result?".

The data stored in archives frequently suffer from a lack of structure and, thus, are difficult to search. HyperTest activates such archives: by linking the data to associated meta information, measurement and test data are assigned to a specific context and can be interpreted for a long time.

Thus, archives move into the focus of an intelligent information structure. Existing systems are simply integrated without redundant data storage. As a result, the data stay where they are needed and still can be commonly searched by all the staff involved.
Test Data Management for Automotive Industry  Top of Page
Following the slogan "from measurement to knowledge" Werum supplies engineers with products and solutions assisting them in all stages from acquiring measurement and test data all the way through processing, saving, archiving and visualizing the data. The core products for these tasks are the test data management systems DAVIS and DAVIS-CAR. Werum's comprehensive information management system HyperTest complements this scope and supports engineers in searching and revealing data and information fed in by distributed measurement systems.
